Frequently asked questions

Does Etika give medical advice?

No. Etika is a consumer information tool that calculates scores from packaging information. It does not replace diagnosis, treatment, a diet plan or nutritional counselling. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or follow a diet recommended by your doctor, consult a healthcare professional. Learn more: Terms of Use.

Is the accuracy of allergen information guaranteed?

No. Always check the packaging yourself. Catalogue information comes from producers and retailers. Changes to a product’s ingredients may not appear in the catalogue immediately. Cross-contact statements such as “made in a facility that also processes...” may also be missing from the source data.

Personalised sensitivity alerts provide supporting information, not a safety check. If you have a serious allergy, the absence of an alert does not mean the product is free of that allergen.

How is product data verified?

The catalogue is built from producer and retailer data. Every nutrition value goes through a validity check. An invalid value, such as “120 g of sugar per 100 g”, is excluded rather than replaced with an estimate. If that value is required for scoring, the product remains unscored.

A photo submitted for a missing product is not added directly to the catalogue. Our team reviews the product and checks its details against our sources before adding it. Unverified products are not suggested as better alternatives.

Does a low score mean a product is unhealthy?

No. The score assesses a product’s composition per 100 grams and within its own category. It does not account for how much or how often you eat it. For example, a dessert has the same score whether you eat it occasionally or every day. A low score does not mean you should never eat a product.

A high score does not mean a product can be eaten in unlimited amounts, either. Use the score to compare products with each other, not to assess a whole meal.

Does the score change with my personal goals?

No. A product’s score is the same for everyone. This means products are assessed using the same criteria, and different users see the same score.

Personal preferences are shown separately from the score. Based on the allergies and sensitivities you select, product cards show personalised alerts. Relevant products can be hidden from search results, but these choices do not change the score.

How are organic points awarded?

Organic status accounts for 10% of the overall score; nutritional quality accounts for 60% and the additive profile for 30%. Products classified as organic receive the full points for this component. Other products receive no points for it.

This assessment uses an official organic certification label or terms such as “organic / organik / bio” in the product name and ingredient text. It relies on what the packaging declares; Etika does not independently audit organic certification. Organic status alone is not enough for a high score: nutritional quality and the additive profile also affect the result.

The product I scanned wasn’t found. What should I do?

The catalogue covers thousands of products sold in Türkiye, but it does not contain every barcode yet. If a product is missing, you can send one clear photo of it. The barcode is included in your scan. Our team checks and enters the product name, ingredients and nutrition facts. Reporting a product is free and does not require an account.

Why is there no score for a product that was found?

If a nutrition value required for scoring, such as energy, sugar, salt or saturated fat, is missing or invalid in the source data, Etika does not calculate a score. Missing values are not replaced with category averages. The product card explains which information is missing, while the ingredient and additive lists remain visible.

What should I do if a score or product detail seems wrong?

Use the reporting option on the product card to request a correction. You can also attach a photo of the packaging. Our team reviews your report and makes any necessary corrections to the catalogue. Read about the scoring method.

Which features are free?

Barcode scanning, product scores out of 100, additive lists and risk information, product search, category browsing, favourites, your last 50 scans, missing-product reports, one sensitivity selection and the top alternative suggestion for each product are always free with an internet connection. Etika+ includes scan history beyond the last 50 entries, shopping lists and shared lists, alerts for multiple sensitivities, the profile summary card and monthly report, all alternative suggestions and offline access. Scanning new barcodes and searching for products without an internet connection are part of Etika+.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Your subscription is managed through your App Store or Google Play account and must be cancelled there. On iOS: Settings → your Apple Account → Subscriptions. On Android: Play Store → Profile → Payments and subscriptions. The subscription management button in Etika takes you to the same place. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription.

How do I delete my account and data?

In the app, go to Profile → Delete account. As soon as you confirm, your account, favourites, lists and preferences are permanently deleted. For details and instructions if you cannot access the app: Account and data deletion.

Who can see a shopping list I share?

Anyone with the sharing link can see the list name, products and quantities, without signing in. The link does not reveal your identity. It shows the current version of the list, including products you add later. You can stop sharing at any time in the app.

Does Etika work offline?

Scoring runs entirely on your device. Products you have opened before and that are still cached remain available without an internet connection. Scanning a new barcode and searching for products offline are part of Etika+. A copy of the catalogue is downloaded to your phone when you get Etika+; this download is not included in the free plan. Scanning and searching with an internet connection are free for everyone.

Who is my data shared with?

We do not show ads, sell data or track you across apps. Your scan history is not uploaded to the cloud. For details of the services we use and how data is shared: Privacy Policy.

How can I submit a data request under GDPR or KVKK?

Email us to submit a data request: destek@etikaapp.com. We respond within 30 days at the latest. If you have access to your account, you can delete all your data in the app.
